Gordon and Carrie were certificated teachers with a young family. Gordon was teaching in public school and Carrie was homeschooling. In the spring of 1992, Gordon attended a science competition and watched as a team of home schooled students competed. They were part of Family Academy/Academy Northwest, a state-approved private school extension program. Impressed by the program, both became trained teacher consultants and opened Salmon Creek Learning Center in the fall of 1993. The following year, they were asked to develop a parent qualifying course and began team teaching The Homeschooling Seminar. In response to a need, Carrie started offering testing and assessments, and then developed the Planning for High School and Beyond workshop. Salmon Creek Learning Center serves local homeschooling families who want to continue home schooling through high school. It provides a small group environment for a few classes, with support from a teacher who understands homeschooling. Carrie's own children, as well as many others, have graduated through the private school extension program with an accredited diploma.
